Urbis is proud to have played an important role in supporting and advancing Green Pathways Gold Places, a joint advocacy initiative by Australia’s built environment peak bodies – the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA), the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA), the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA), and the Design Institute of Australia (DIA) – helping turn the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games into a lasting, everyday urban legacy.

The initiative champions a city wide Green Grid – a connected network of green spaces and public places that prioritises walkability, health, climate resilience and Brisbane’s subtropical character long after the Games. The Green Grid builds on earlier thinking led by the Office of the Queensland Government Architect under Malcolm Middleton OAM, including the Inner-City Brisbane Study undertaken by Lat Studios and completed in 2017.

The early stages of the current advocacy work were supported through the convening and facilitation of a cross disciplinary workshop, bringing together more than 90 built environment professionals to shape a shared Green Grid framework. Building on this foundation, we supported the coordination and preparation of two advocacy documents that enabled direct engagement with key stakeholders.

Last week, Brisbane City Council announced the Green Grid as the highest voted idea – from 56 legacy proposals – as part of the Brisbane: Making our Mark community consultation. The result reflects strong community support and the impact of sustained, design led advocacy.

Urbis continues to support leaders within industry associations who are helping guide this work, including Glen Power, Partner at Urbis and AILA Queensland Chapter President. Glen’s strategic influence and commitment to collaboration have helped progress the Green Grid from an idea to a credible, city shaping proposition – alongside the contributions of many others across the profession.

Green infrastructure is not just about sustainability; it's about creating healthier, more connected and liveable communities. By investing in a 'Green Grid', we can leave a legacy of vibrant, walk-able precincts that benefit Brisbane for generations to come.
